Surrey Police Waste Millions on Obsolete Criminal Intelligence IT System

Published: Wednesday 14 August 2013

Over the past six years, Surrey Police have spent millions working secretly with Memex SAS to develop a new computer system to store records and log crimes so that commanders could map crime trends across the country.

The force’s new police commissioner cut the disastrous project deciding “it was not in the best interests of Surrey Police or the Surrey public” to carry on with the scheme after senior commanders realised the system would not be compatible with those of other forces around the country.

This huge debacle comes just months after the force lost £160,000 in consultancy fees pulling out of a contract with shamed G4S after the Olympic security fiasco in 2012. This contract was meant for G4S to provide staff for back office support in West Midlands and Surrey before the force pulled out of the contract.

Commissioner Hurley has implemented a full scale inquiry into the incident and has released a statement declaring “it would not be proper for me to comment further at this stage.” He has predicted that the inquiry will take some time to complete.

The Government’s Police and Crime Panel and auditing consultancy Grant Thornton have now both launched separate investigations to determine exactly how much of Taxpayers’ money was wasted.
